Dude, Where's my Baseball Sim?, Part 2

Rate this Entry
Hey, look kids!

I'm BAAAACK with another installment of DWMBS!

Okay, Part 2..

Uh...

Umm...

Frack!

Hold on a second.

Okay. Here we go!

What OOTP 2007 needs in my opinion, besides a complete redesign of the awful interface that is, is a bit more realism.

I've always hated the fact that OOTP 6.5 didn't have rainouts, but I think 2006 took a step back, eliminating weather all together. It was, well, just wrong. I understand that they need to pull out some stuff to get the game released, but well, look where that ended up, in my opinion. (The pits is where, by the way...)

Let's face it, weather is a part of baseball, and somewhere out there, there has to be an analysis of the effects of the weather on games. Back before the invention of ballpark lights, lots of games were even called on account of darkness. For a baseball sim that wants to be realistic, this needs to be reflected in some way.

OOTP needs, at the very least, to have weather, weather that effects the way game are played, and rainouts. Really, really need to have rainouts.

Implementing a system that can allow you to reschedule games shouldn't be that hard. I mean, after 7 and a half versions, I think it's a bit overdue.

I don't really like the interface much either. Everyone said you'll get used to it, but I find it unnecessarily difficult to navigate. I think some things really need to be simplified, including setting up a league.

I think the interface has always been a problem for the OOTP series. It's always seemed so clunky and non-intuitive. I understand that OOTP has a bunch of features and that the interface is probably partly clunky because of everything it has to offer. Still, I feel there is a lot of room for improvement in this area.

Solid and intuitive UI can really help not only make for good environment for the user, but can also help reduce product usage difficulty levels. In other words, the game would probably be a lot easier to play if the UI was orgranized a bit more.

I agree the interface is pretty complex now and then and doesn't provide always a clear overview. My main problem with the game is that there are still some weird AI roster moves. In my career thread the poor Bill Sexson, who just pitched two beautiful games for the Nationals and is a young pitching prospect got released...for no apparant reason. This kind of moves kind of ruin games for me. I still think the game has a lot of potential, but it seems that the base is not stable enough (overview, ai, etc.) to hold all the new stuff.

There definitely are still significant AI issues right now. The frustrating part is that if these issues matter enough to you to make the game unplayable(which seems to be the case for a lot of people), then you have spent $35 for something that you aren't going to use and probably should have been tested better before it was released. The comments that people are making about this being a beta that SI charged for are not that far off base. I really think that SI should give a significant discount to people who purchased the game this year to show good faith to what has been a pretty loyal fanbase.

I don't know to what extent this is true, but it seems to me that not many leagues at all converted to the new game. I also haven't seen that many leagues sprout up using the new version. The latest patch may have helped the game some, but it was released as the baseball season was winding down and football was starting up.
